OK, seriously, this novel isn't meant to be a parody, but all the tropes that you would find in a political thriller are there. An international conspiracy, intense action, sudden plot twists, too many characters to keep track of - yet they are also so over the top you have to smile at the exaggerations. Also, while most political thrillers have a fairly realistic this-could-happen scenario, the one in this book sounds far too absurd to be taken seriously. (Well, until you come to the Poe's Law epilogue.)

Now, of course, every political thriller serves as an author tract, and this is no exception. But while most make the flaw of turning their villains into straw men, this story inverts that cliché. The arguments given against conservative Catholicism are based on actual arguments that intelligent, educated people make, and the counterarguments not only directly address these claims, but are also grounded in facts and reason.

Thus, what I took away was a story that isn't meant to be taken seriously and a checklist of reasons why right-wing Catholics are not as bad as their haters say. That may not have been the author's intention, but that's what I got out of it.

Be warned - this will keep you reading, no matter what your bedtime was.
Ah, another roll up in a blanket with a warm beverage and a snack because you won't want to put the story down for fear you might miss something! A fun story, with delightfully improbable solutions to problems created by the current hostility toward the Vatican being extrapolated out to one logical progression.

We get the viewpoint of a different character in this book. Thus allowing for a few details left out of the first book to be shared with the reader. A good clear narration follows, and the various voices of the characters were easier to follow this time around-- I actually didn't need to use my list of characters this time.

We grieve with the characters, cheer for the characters, laugh at the funny twists, and root for the good guys.

A satisfying light read-- fun with enough substance to allow the reader to get lost in the story.

I highly recommend.
Fast-paced and easy enough to follow. No tangled web of subplots; just a good way to spend a few afternoons - read in series with the other two books.
I read A Pius Man some time ago, so the characters were all familiar and the book easy to roll in to. There were several things I particularly liked about this one. The accuracy of Finn's historical context was a very pleasant surprise and backdrop to the credibility of his premise. If you've read the other reviews, you know this is a passionate defense of the Catholic Church in a hostile world. The differences between truth and not-truth are particularly illustrated in the Pope's defense at his "Trial" before the World Court. If you don't know - or don't care to know - your history, it's still a whale of a good tale.

The characters develop from the first book and throughout this part of the story. Their diversity is highlighted by the other diverse groups that find common cause with our heroes the men in blue, the Mafia, the IRA - such unlikely and delightful partners in defense not only of the Pope and the Church, but of Truth and Freedom.

There's a lot of fun stuff for the technically inclined as well. A number of my immediate family are in IT and involved in computer security, others are active in shooting sports, and some are military - all sorts of action and adventure and for every taste. Martial arts? Got it as well.

So whether you read for entertainment, or historical context, cultural diveristy, or political perspectives, this trilogy has it all. Enter into the adventure with an open mind and enjoy the ride! Can't wait to see where book three takes us!
